Honoring the Body that Builds Baby
Feb 06, 2023Welcome to Motherhood
Pregnancy can be a wonderful transition into motherhood filled with the practice of healthy balance. A time to learn how to honor your needs, listen to your body and become acquainted with the needs of the new life inside of you.
Pregnancy is an opportunity to bridge a foundation of wellness for our babies – to nourish and protect them while development is so remarkable. Seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy can assist in the development of proper body balance to house baby, mindful movement, vibrant nutrition, and positive stress management that are intrinsic for both mama and baby’s wellbeing.
TRUST YOUR BODY.
At times motherhood can be burdened with the enormous responsibility to “get everything right.” It seems advice about how to birth can be found just about anywhere from anyone. Though many mothers experience a sense of ease during pregnancy, the overwhelming message around pregnancy and birthing has a daunting undertone. Take a breath. The female body holds deep within its cellular matrix the story of birth that has been evolving for millennia. The body is intuitive and wise. A pregnant woman does not have to do anything in order to give birth. She does not need to impose her will; she just needs to be willing and prepared. Being naturally receptive to your body can assist in not letting fear eject you from the moment; to open and allow birth to take place. The more relaxation, trust and openness gathered during pregnancy the less painful and often the more ecstatic the birth process can become. A woman has the innate capacity to surrender to an infinitely more intelligent and powerful force than her own mind. You are not a medical mystery, my love. You are housing a child. Take a breath, and trust the process.
REDUCE BODY BURDEN THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC CARE.
Chiropractic care can help balance the muscles and ligaments surrounding the uterus and pelvis allowing for an ideal home for baby. Structural changes happen quickly during pregnancy. We know that women experience on average a 24% reduction in the length of labor time with chiropractic care during pregnancy and that rises to a 33% reduction for those mothers who have given birth before. By altering the biomechanics and neuromuscular control of the pelvis we are likely enabling the muscles to become more relaxed and joints more mobile which probably helps them to expand more freely during labor and settle more easily afterwards
MOVE.
There is a new phrase spreading like wildfire in the birthing professional world “train for the most athletic event of your life.” I don’t care if you’re Serena Williams, giving birth will be biggest athletic event of your life. Benefits of pre-natal exercise include decreased diastasis recti (splitting of your abdominal muscles), reduction of labor time by 30%, increased mood, circulation and energy levels.
BUILD YOUR TRIBE.
It takes a village is no joke when it comes to fostering your wellbeing and raising a family, but don’t wait until baby is here to navigate your needs and cultivate community. Before baby arrives I challenge you to purposefully and intentionally consider what type of support you may need and who you can feel safe calling on. Consider the practical needs of your young family such as help with cooking, cleaning, meal preparation, or childcare for older siblings. If you don’t have family near you postpartum doulas make a great addition to team-new-baby, assisting with almost any of the needs listed. When considering the support you need be sure to include any emotional needs you may be faced with as well. Let yourself be cared for, celebrated and surrounded by the ones that love you as you navigate the magnificent and messy postpartum life.
